The Uncited Brand Economy
Your pages are still being read. They are no longer being visited.

Still here? Good. This week I'm going to tell you about a new kind of customer.
Many websites are still being read every day and visited far less. The reader gets the answer from an AI summary built on their page and often does not click through.
Inside today: the customer that change created, what they already pay to watch the problem, and three businesses built on fixing it instead.
The curve
Look at this for ten seconds before you read on.

Google Trends for "AI SEO", United States, weekly, since September 2021: searches stayed under 10 on the Google Trends index until the end of 2024. They started climbing in early 2025, jumped at the end of April and kept rising after Google opened AI Mode to every US user on 20 May 2025. They hit their highest week in September 2025 and held a median of 58 through the first half of 2026.
What it is
Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the work of getting a brand named and cited inside the answers that AI tools write, such as Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT or Perplexity, rather than ranked in a list of links under them.
What is happening underneath is simple. The question still gets asked and the answer is often still taken from your page. The visit is what disappears. Pew Research Center tracked 68,879 real Google searches made by 900 US adults in March 2025: when an AI summary appeared, people clicked a normal result 8% of the time. Without one, 15%.
Why now, and not two years ago
In September 2024, AI Overviews had been live in the US for four months and AI Mode did not exist. Today Google has put an AI answer mode in front of every US user, and BrightEdge data published in March 2026 put AI Overviews on close to half of the queries it tracks, up 58% in a year. The loss stopped being a rumor and became a line in the monthly report.
The new customer
Before: a business owner or marketing lead who paid for SEO to get ranked and measured success in visits.
Now: the same person, watching a site that still gets read and no longer gets visited. They already spend money on it: tracking tools from $29 a month (Otterly Lite) to $489 (Otterly Premium), Ahrefs' AI Visibility Index at $199 a month, and agency retainers that start around $1,000 to $3,500 a month for small companies, according to 310 Creative's August 2026 pricing guide. They pay on a recurring basis, monthly.
The economy forming around them
Layer | What they buy | What it costs today |
|---|---|---|
Measurement | Tracking whether AI engines mention and cite them | Otterly $29 to $489/mo; Ahrefs AI Visibility Index $199/mo; Peec AI €85 to €425/mo billed yearly |
Enterprise platforms | Full dashboards, agents and workflow | Profound, custom pricing; raised $96M at a $1B valuation in Feb 2026 |
Diagnosis | One-off audits that say what to change | $1,500 to $5,000 per AI visibility audit (310 Creative) |
Execution | Agencies and consultants who rewrite the pages | $1,000 to $3,500/mo entry retainers; $100 to $250/hour (310 Creative) |
Automation | Content agents that write and optimize at scale | Siteimprove Content Writing and Optimization Agent, launched 9 Jun 2026, enterprise pricing |
Off-site citations | Being present where the engines take their sources: Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Wikipedia, review sites | Reddit marketing agencies from about $3,000 to $5,000/mo at entry (Discovered Labs) |
Local AI visibility | Being the business an AI names for "best plumber near me" | Tracking from $79/mo (Lighthouse Local); done-for-you offers rarely published |
The dashboards tell you that you are invisible. The money is in the person who changes what the engines read.
Three business ideas
1. The Fix List. Customer: the small company already paying $29 to $489 a month for a tracker. Problem: the tracker shows where they are missing and does not tell them which page to rewrite first. Solution: a monthly deliverable that takes their tracking export and returns a ranked list of pages, each with the answer to add and the claim to make citable, and rewrites the top eight. Why one person can start it: it is writing and judgment, sold as a retainer, with no software to build. First step: take one prospect's tracker export and produce the list for free.
2. Answer Block Studio. Customer: SEO agencies whose clients are now asking about AEO. Problem: they can buy a tracker but have no one producing the pages. Solution: white-label production of answer blocks, FAQ markup and citable statistics, priced per page, for agencies in one vertical. Why one person can start it: one agency relationship brings several end clients. First step: offer three agencies a paid pilot of ten pages.
3. Citation Gap Report. Customer: the mid-market brand that does not yet know a competitor is being recommended instead of it. Problem: people rarely buy a fix for a problem they have not been shown. Solution: run a fixed set of buyer questions through the main AI engines, show which brand gets named, and sell the Fix List behind it. Why one person can start it: the report is a few hours of work with a tracker on its entry plan. First step: publish the report for one industry and send it to the ten brands in it.
